The Crown, built in the 16th century, was foremost a coaching station.
The rows of cottages running from it are the oldest in Tisbury and the Crown is of similar age. The stable block, hay loft and tack room are still in place although are not in use and are currently looking somewhat tired.
The Congregational Non-Conformists met for the first time in the Upstairs room in 1666. This seems unusual as they were temperance people and supposedly non-drinkers, but it might only have been a coaching station not a drinking house.
There is a long scroll in existence with signatures of all the Temperance people in Tisbury who tried to get the Crown Inn closed some years ago. Needless to say they did not succeed!
The Crown was a part of the Gibbs Mew Brewery of Salisbury until it was sold when the Brewery closed.
